Dr. Prince’s mentorship style:

My job as an advisor is to support my students to become the people they want to be. I encourage my students to become independent and find the research questions that are important to them. Students in my lab work together on multiple projects rather than focusing on one unifying project. It is important for me to help my students to identify their career goals and help them find ways to achieve their goals. This process is personalized for each student. I meet with students weekly during their first year and after that I give the students the option to continue to meet weekly, every other week or as needed. During advising meetings, my students and I plan ahead and make decisions early. For example, planning external practicum sites, research projects, and teaching positions early in their program of study. As such, advising meetings are typically active, working meetings. Meetings often include planning thesis or dissertation projects, doing statistical analysis, working on case conceptualization and treatment planning, or discussing professional development issues. My active and engaged approach helps my students to continue to make forward progress throughout their time in the program. Overall, my job is to help students take advantage of the opportunities that graduate school provides to set them up to achieve their long-term career goals.
