Canetto Research Team

Welcome to

Canetto’s Research Team Page!

The focus of this research team is on cultural scripts (e.g., norms, beliefs, narratives) of femininity and masculinity and the impact of gender scripts on behavior and well-being. A stream of this research explores attitudes and beliefs about gender and suicidal behaviors – including suicidal thoughts, nonfatal suicidal behavior, suicide, and assisted suicide – across intersectionalities of age, sexual orientation, social class, and disability. Another stream examines cultural norms, stereotypes, and narratives of women’s and men’s interest, persistence, and success in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). A third stream is on beliefs about discrimination on the basis of sex, across countries. A fourth stream is about women’s and men’s unpaid work (i.e., family carework and housework), paid work, and health (morbidity and mortality) across countries. A fifth stream is on stereotypes of gender, aging, and sexual orientation. A sixth stream is about cultural, gender, and age issues in human rights globally. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used in Canetto’s studies.

The aim of this research is to explore these topics through qualitative and quantitative inquiry, and to expand understandings of the impacts and performance, of gender ideologies across multiple domains.
